Root canal treatment is a procedure used when the soft tissues inside the tooth, known as the pulp, become infected or damaged. The damaged tissue is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. After cleaning, the canals are filled and typically sealed with a filling or crown.
In modern dentistry, anesthetic solutions and techniques have been developed to ensure that you should not feel any pain during the procedure. Inadequately numbed teeth can cause pain, so the expertise and approach of your dentist are crucial in managing this effectively.
Teeth that require root canal treatment are generally those with decay or other causes leading to infection. Root canal treatment does not shorten the lifespan of the tooth; on the contrary, it allows the damaged tooth to remain in the mouth for many years. With proper fillings and crowns done after a well-performed root canal treatment, you can use your teeth healthily for many years.
The duration varies depending on the condition of the tooth before treatment. Generally, it can be completed in 1 or 2 sessions. Factors such as the condition of the tooth, the number of canals, the extent of infection, and the location of the tooth affect the duration of each session. A simple root canal treatment may take about 1 hour, while more complex treatments may take longer.
Root canal treated teeth can sometimes show gray or black discoloration. While simple teeth whitening may solve it in some cases, aesthetic materials such as fillings, veneers, or crowns are used to mask the color in others.
Even years after a well-done root canal treatment, a tooth can become reinfected due to reasons such as decay, fracture of the filling or crown. In such cases, pain or abscess may develop in the tooth. Root canal treatments for these teeth are renewed to restore their health.
In cases of tooth fractures, the size of the fracture and the portion remaining in the mouth are important. Small fractures can be treated with fillings and crowns, while in cases of vertical fractures, extraction of the tooth may be necessary.
Firstly, your dentist should ensure the durability of the tooth with appropriate treatments. However, it's important to note that a tooth with root canal treatment is weaker compared to a healthy tooth, so we should be careful not to bite hard things like nuts or walnuts with this tooth. Especially if we have a habit of clenching our teeth, we should inform our dentist and take appropriate protective measures.
Untreated infected teeth can develop abscesses. In this case, the tooth may not heal with root canal treatment alone and may require additional treatment methods. Depending on the condition of the tooth, the number of roots, and its location in the mouth, consult your dentist without delay for appropriate treatment.
Infections in the soft tissue inside the tooth do not heal with antibiotics alone. They require proper root canal treatments and cleaning to heal.
