WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to clean out infection from inside a tooth and preserve its health. During this procedure, the nerve and vascular tissue (pulp) inside the tooth are removed, the emptied area is cleaned and filled. This prevents the tooth from being extracted and maintains its function.
WHY IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT NEEDED?
Deep Cavities: Cavities inside the tooth can damage the nerve and vascular tissue, leading to infections. In such cases, a root canal treatment may be necessary.
Tooth Trauma: Trauma or impact to a tooth can damage the nerve tissue. In such situations, a root canal treatment may also be required.
Recurrent Infections: If a tooth has recurrent infections, causing severe pain, facial swelling, or abscesses, root canal treatment can be performed.
Root canal treatment helps preserve the tooth instead of extracting it and maintains its function.
HOW IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT PERFORMED?
Initially, local anesthesia is administered to numb the tissues around your tooth so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. The protective layer of the tooth, enamel, and dentin are removed to access the pulp inside the tooth. The nerve and vascular tissue (pulp) inside the tooth are removed and the infected areas are cleaned. The canal system inside the tooth is shaped and cleaned using special instruments. This area is then washed and disinfected with special medications. The shaped canal is filled with a biologically compatible filling material, usually gutta-percha.
After the root canal treatment is completed, the tooth is typically sealed with a filling or a crown.
Root canal treatment is usually completed over several sessions and performed by an endodontist.
IS THERE PAIN DURING ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Root canal treatment is generally painless because the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the tissues around the tooth. However, some patients might feel slight discomfort, such as mild pressure or vibration, which is generally different from pain. Your dentist will ensure you are comfortable and will keep you informed throughout the procedure.
WHAT SHOULD I BE AWARE OF AFTER ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Pain and Swelling: Mild pain or swelling after the procedure is normal. Use the pain relievers recommended by your dentist to alleviate discomfort. Apply a cold compress if there is swelling.
Oral Care: Continue brushing your teeth normally after root canal treatment. Using dental floss is also important. However, be careful not to touch the treated tooth for the period recommended by your dentist.
Diet: Try to eat soft and easy-to-chew foods for the first few days after the procedure. Avoid hot, cold, or very hard foods.
Follow-ups: Regularly attend the follow-up appointments recommended by your dentist. Post-treatment check-ups are crucial.
Sensitivity: Some sensitivity in the treated tooth is normal and should decrease over time. If the pain or sensitivity increases or persists, contact your dentist immediately.
Teeth Grinding: If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, it can cause pain or discomfort in the treated tooth. In such cases, consult your dentist about using a protective appliance.
It's important to follow your dentist's recommendations to maintain the health of your teeth after a root canal treatment.
